Photo of the Month: January 2015

This month’s photo features cashiers working through the winter storm rush at a Market Basket store in Brockton, MA.

The winter season can bring areas in the North East region of the U.S. dangerous and inconvenient weather conditions.  The weather conditions can especially hurt low wage workers in the service sector who cannot afford to miss a paycheck and also unlikely to get a paid snow day.

Meanwhile, decently paid Market Basket cashiers were on hand to help customers prepare for the major January storm. The New England supermarket chain, Market Basket is most noted for offering quality food at discounted prices and uniquely high quality conditions to its employees.  Though as Heron reported earlier, Market Basket risked losing its reputation at the peak of a decades long feud between two cousins’ control and vision of the company.  However, after employees took the streets to rally for the reinstatement of their CEO Arthur T. Demoulas and won, Arthur T. reiterated Market Basket’s philosophy that “employees are the most valuable asset in this business.”
